More and more people are reaching out for holistic modalities as they realise we are all much more than just our physical bodies. The difference between Reiki and other energy healing modalities is that is Reiki also encompasses a self-work healing practise. While many people think Reiki is just a hands-on healing practice, it is so much more.

Nearly everyone I meet ask, what will happen in their first Reiki therapy session and the honest answer is it is completely up to them! Each Reiki therapy session is unique as Reiki is a holistic energy healing modality that helps to create balance in mind, body and spirit.  I have had clients experience physical pain relief through to deep emotional releases.

Reiki can be used for anyone regardless of age or medical diagnosis; however, Reiki is not a replacement for traditional medical care, rather it can be used as a safe complementary therapy.

The Reiki treatment is typically done on a massage table however it is also able to be performed in a seated position.  The client remains fully clothed and can reposition their body as they need throughout the session so that they remain comfortable. Reiki is performed with gentle touch, but it also can be performed completely hands off for those clients who might not like to be touched. Sometimes people who have experienced physical or emotional trauma, burns, or receiving chemotherapy may prefer the treatment to be done completely hands off. This does not make the treatment any less effective. Reiki also can be performed distantly.

Hand placements are used around the head, neck, upper chest, abdomen, knees, ankles and feet as well as shoulders, arms and hands.  The client may also roll over and placements on the back are performed if needed. Reiki practitioners are trained to allow the energy to flow to the client who receives it as needed.   The energy of Reiki has its own intelligence and intuitively knows where to go on its own.  This may be a foreign concept for many people but those who experience a session often understand it more thoroughly once the session has been completed.

During the Reiki treatment clients may feel waves of subtle energy gently moving through their body.  Others may experience heat or feel cool and perhaps even see comforting colours and thoughts. It is also quite common to feel completely relaxed enough to fall asleep through the session.  Reiki works on all levels, so even though there might not be a physical sensation, the energy could be working on a deep emotional or spiritual level.

After the session is completed the practitioner will answer any questions you may have and drinking water to help facilitate the cleansing process which may take the form of tears or even a runny nose  or a chesty cough which is a good sign that the body is finding its way back to balance.

Your first Reiki session can bring about personal change, inner balance, clarity and spark in your intuitive guidance. Many clients choose to have follow up sessions on a fortnightly or monthly basis to help them maintain a sense of wholeness and wellbeing.

After feeling the benefits of Reiki some clients also choose to learn Reiki for themselves so that they can perform self-care at home and on their animals and love ones.
